WE ARE STILL IN A WAITING PATTERN
- PERHAPS MONDAY NOV.3/08 WILL BRING MORE NEWS.
ANOTHER UPDATE: WAI YOUNG IS GOING TO APPEAL.
SHE GOES TO COURT ON THURSDAY. This story is not over. Stay tuned.
UPDATE:
I have heard from readers of this blog, Soccermom and West Coast Teddi, and from a CTV article, that Ujjal Dosanjh held on to this seat by 22 votes. Elections Canada has not put a confirmation of this on their site as of this moment.A very tight finish on Election night has Conservative Wai Young awaiting a Judicial Recount to determine if Incumbent Liberal Ujjal Dosanjh will still be the victor. 33 Votes separate them. Mr. Dosanjh has 16,101 votes and Wai Young has 16,068 as stated on the Elections Canada website. The recount will be done by a B.C. Supreme Court judge.
It is worth noting:
[Judicial recounts do not deal with any issue other than how a ballot should be counted and the totals, according to Elections Canada's website. - and further- Concerns about fraud and irregularities in the electoral process must be addressed through a CONTESTED ELECTION APPLICATION. ]You ran a great race WAI and we conservatives are tremendously proud of you. I am wondering if you can appeal this. I have emailed you on this topic through your conservative party website. If you decide not to appeal, we certainly hope to see you run in the next federal election.
Before the election day, Wai published a letter to Vancouver South Residents, which is quoted in it’s entirety below.
Dear Vancouver South Residents and Voters,
As the Candidate for the Conservative Party of Canada in Vancouver South, I am honoured to have the opportunity, in this federal election, to become your Member of Parliament in Ottawa. Arriving in Vancouver as a child in an immigrant family, I never imagined that one day I would accept the challenge to run to become a Member of Parliament. Like some of you, learning English, getting an education or earning a living were more immediate concerns. However, Canada is a country of incredible opportunity, and I have learned that by working hard and getting involved in our community, each one of us can have an amazing impact – to contribute to the well-being of our families, our communities and to our country.
Growing up and gaining life and work experience throughout the Lower Mainland, as well as in Victoria and Ottawa, I have learned that a strong, proactive and responsible government can have an immensely positive impact on our daily lives. Opportunities to develop language and work skills, to build businesses and careers, and to live in safe and healthy neighbourhoods are important things to each of us, and where government leadership and involvement is of critical importance. As a parent, I am particularly concerned about our children and how Canada can remain one of the best countries in the world. As a daughter, I am an advocate for the rights, safety and well-being of our seniors. As a small business person I want a strong and stable economy. As a global citizen, I am aware of earth’s environmental challenges and want to work towards addressing them. I am sure that many of you share these concerns and I look forward to working on these important issues this year —with you, the many businesses, community groups and organizations in Vancouver South.
It is my belief that each person can and should get involved with government, in whichever way we can – from something as important as getting out to vote – to joining a political party – to becoming a political candidate. Canada is a stronger, richer nation when all citizens are actively engaged in charting our future.
Under the leadership of Stephen Harper, the Conservative Party of Canada has set a strong and clear direction for Canada. As your candidate, I want Vancouver South and its residents to have a strong voice in Ottawa so that we will continue to build a strong society and economy in which Canadians can experience success and well-being. Please join me in making this a reality.

And this man is touted as a possible leader of the liberals as he would bring the west back to the liberal table. If he wins the recount, every time he is on tv or asking questions in the HofC, or mentions PMSH only has a minority, he should be reminded he almost didn’t make it. He lost ver 5000 votes from 2006. He is not a leader.
The liberals have lost at least 81 seats since 1997. That is a lot of seats to regain, and members, and 1.95/vote.

And MaryT..not too long ago the talk was that he and Rae were going to criss-cross the country to do what I do not know..but it probably was to whine about the conservatives and point fingers outward…never at themselves…
It would be nice to see the seat change. He had a heart scare a bit ago and may need to recover more…that is a serious affliction. The pace of an MP is hectic.

Someone close to me remarked today. Why don’t they all just join forces (in an agreement) to work with the government for Canada’s sake…(just for once in their party career !!!!)
–said in frustration I expect–
The party good is always at the expense of Canada.

That pompous jerk Ujjal needs to be shown the door. I find it laughable that anyone would think he would be leadership material. He’s still fighting the 2005/06 election, for crying out loud. He was a loser as a Premier (for a very short time, I might add), and a whiny jerk as an MP.
I hope he gets tossed out on his big fat butt. Jeez, they were even playing radio ads with him doing the campaigning out here in BC. The evil rhetoric that came out of that man’s mouth made my hair curl. I think most voters in BC are sick to death of him and his arrogance.
Toss – him – out. Now let me tell you what I really think about him….LOL!

Recount in Que has given a seat to the liberals at the expense of the Bloc. Just announced on cbc.

Mary T. – I have mixed emotions about that. But imagine how the Bloc candidate must feel!

CR, my hubby heard it will be Wednesday. I’ll try to find some kind of confirmation.

Here we go. It’s in the ‘local’ section. Typical Record!

Thanks Joanne.

MaryT | October 24, 2008 at 9:48 pm
That’s the one CR, but notice how every party lost votes in the recount. 563, rejected ballots, somebody sure goofed up on election night. Wonder what polls had the most errors.
No word yet on the BC recount. Be interesting to see who those rejected ballots were for.

Ujjal win confirmed, via CKNW radio. 22 votes!
Dang!

Conservative Reporter | October 24, 2008 at 10:16 pm
I do not see it on Elections Canada’s site yet…
What a disappointment…so close !!
16.
Joanne (T.B.) | October 24, 2008 at 10:23 pm
22 votes is a hollow victory. He’d better watch out the next time!
17.
West Coast Teddi | October 24, 2008 at 10:31 pm
the 22 vote margin was reported by Wai to CTV and was not final. she was indicating that the margin of victory had come down from 63 to 22. That may have been updated since I last was on the elections Canada site but they don’t issue interim numbers. still very very close

Soccermom | October 24, 2008 at 10:32 pm
I doubt if this squeak of a win will dampen Ujjie’s pomposity. But it will likely make him even angrier at the NDP.

Joanne (T.B.) | October 25, 2008 at 8:48 am
CR, a reader sent me this link.
“Tory candidate Wai Young said she was disappointed because Associate Chief Justice Partrick Dohm, who was in charge of the recount, elected not to open all the ballot boxes.”
Haven’t check it out completely yet but if that’s true, it stinks.
Now I see on NNW that Ujjal is planning to run for leadership again!

Hey Soccermom, tell us how you really feel about Dosanjh. LOL.
I am curious as to why EC would not open the ballot boxes. A recount is a recount, as far as I’m concerned. Even if Dosanjh wins, it’s not a real victory – to win by so few votes is a clear indication that his riding does not like us. Plus, there will be a lot of ticked off constituents. His opponent seems like a really nice person, especially compared with Dosanjh. I have never liked the guy.

Does anyone know if the judge in the PEI recount ordered every ballot box opened?
22.
Conservative Reporter | October 25, 2008 at 11:22 am
So far Joanne…as far as PEI is concerned…
a quote from an article words it this way:
I am researching further

Conservative Reporter | October 25, 2008 at 11:33 am
Not nailing much new information down at all ..concerning Prince Edward Island recount…
Every article quotes the same thing…(Egmont must be quite a small riding..and you would think that counting everything..and examining spoiled ballots would not be a hard thing to do…

I am placing this here for posterity… it has good info in it…

Thanks for doing all that research, CR. Yes, that is troubling about the people in the lineup not being allowed to vote. I wonder if that’s standard policy.

MaryT | October 26, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Is it too soon to start contributing to this lady’s riding association so they can spend the next few years or months getting out to meet the voters. Overcoming a 9000 vote lead from 2006 is a win in itself. This fiasco should give her a huge majority next time. If Ujjal runs for the leadership I might join the liberals to vote for him, then work like H*** to defeat him, not only as a potential PM but as a sitting MP.

Joanne (T.B.) | October 26, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I wonder if Wai Young would have to pay for a challenge to the decision herself?
31.
Conservative Reporter | October 26, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Well that is up for debate Joanne. This time she did not have to ask for a recount…it was automatic. I would expect that she would be liable for any costs connected with the appealing of this decision.
SHE HAS LESS THAN 8 DAYS NOW..to get her appeal in…that is why I emailed her…but it is not clear if anyone is watching her site now that the election is over.
I would be happy to contribute towards her costs. I wonder how many would be. Be interesting to find out if there is a response to this. It would have to be quick.. Time of the essence here.
We could, after the fact, send money… that might be better…we do not know her mindset right now…and there is no time and it makes no sense to contribute with expectations…
oh well…rambling here
To me WAI is worth extra effort.
32.
Joanne (T.B.) | October 26, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Just came across something here that tells me she likely won’t appeal:
…If Young is thrilled with the results, perhaps it’s because she’ll be free to continue her work as a consultant to the Stephen Harper government.
Her small business, Wai Young & Associates, collected $578,590 in grants and contributions from Citizenship and Immigration Canada in the second quarter of 2008.
What she should do now is continue to build her base and get her name out there. Next time she should be dynamite!

Joanne (T.B.) | October 26, 2008 at 11:12 pm
BTW, some of my readers are telling me that the above link is from a publication attempting to smear Wai Young.
34.
Joanne (T.B.) | October 28, 2008 at 9:22 am
There is definitely a smear campaign going on behind the scenes. I’ll give you some links later.

http://www.straight.com (Charlie Smith was the writer)
The Georgia Straight is Vancouver’s entertainment weekly. 150 pages of expensive condo sales interspersed with a few lefty articles by Charlie Smith, and lefty politicians and activists and the gamut through to 9-11 truthers.
Gee I guess only left wingers are supposed to get gov’t contracts according to the Straight.

Conservative Reporter | October 28, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Yes Janice….that does seem to be the “way it is” –
—thinking in a bubble–
We have so many lefts now coming out and saying it was all stolen from them (those bad conservatives) (the election that is…not the recounts) – I can well understand why they would feel forced to dig for dirt…
We conservatives are used to it. Same same…
How do you say “entitlements” (we are entitled to our entitlements)
Thanks for the info Janice.
